As our social media accounts fill with ‘New year, new you’ posts and messages, many of us ask ourselves the same question as last year – ‘how am I going to make this the year that I finally get fit?’
You know the feeling. We’re just emerging from the excess and festivities of the holidays, and with Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year now behind us, and a new year full of possibility ahead, millions all over the world are looking for that ‘finally this year’ weight loss solution.
I can certainly relate, because I was once one of those millions stuck in the cycle of yo-yo dieting. Every January I was so desperate to finally lose the weight for good, and to improve my health and fitness, but nothing seemed to work. It was a simple discovery about 20 years ago that changed everything for me, and that’s helped me to stay fit and healthy all year round for decades – even over the holiday season.
What was this simple discovery? You might call it the missing piece of the puzzle – Mindset. A healthy lifestyle is not just about diet and exercise, it’s about building a healthy mindset that helps us to make the right diet and exercise choices for our bodies.
The combination of Exercise, Diet and Mindset, are the three elements that have helped me to build a strong foundation of health and fitness for all these years.
*Exercise. Every one of us lives in a physical body, and that physical body needs movement and exercise to keep it strong and healthy. It needs us to do some kind of physical activity such as jogging, yoga, aerobics, etc. We don’t all need to be athletes or sports stars, but our bodies were designed to move, and if we want to live long healthy lives, movement and exercise are a vital part of taking good care of our bodies. Personally, I recommend doing light resistance training with weights, and adding resistance bands to your routine. Stay away from heavy weights, especially when you are starting out, and remember to only exercise for 30-45 minutes per day.
*Diet. The other element that a healthy body needs, is good quality fuel to run on. Think of your body as if it were a car – if you owned your dream car, what kind of fuel would you put into it? If you filled the tank with the wrong fuel or with cheap imitation gas, would you expect it to perform properly? Your body is the same: if you feed it with junk food, you can’t expect it to perform at its optimum level. But here’s the kicker: if your car breaks down because you haven’t taken care of it, you can just buy another one. You can never replace your body.
*Mindset. The third element of mindset, is the most important of all. You can have the best diet and exercise strategies in the world, but if you don’t have the mindset to stay motivated and consistent, you won’t stick to your strategies long enough to see lasting change. Once I began to apply the right mindset to the exercises and diet that work for my body, staying fit and healthy became so natural. One of the simplest things you can do to build a mindset for success, is to make time each day to visualize the outcome. See your health and fitness goals clearly in your mind each day. Focus on what it will look like, sound like and feel like to finally have your dream body. Doing this every day will begin to create a shift in your subconscious mind, pulling you towards your goals, and making lasting change possible.
Using all three of these elements in my approach to health and fitness has helped me, and hundreds of clients, to lose weight for good, and to feel great about their bodies. I hope that you too can reach your health and fitness goals this year by understanding and applying the three elements of exercise, diet and mindset, for a happy and healthy 2019!
